“Obelisks Speaking” is an ode to Donna Summer-era disco and I’m pleased to be able to finally share it with the world to cap off another weird year”, said Network Nick.

“Johnny Synths” follows on where the debut album, “Nick Work”, left off. Comprising mostly instrumental tracks, it is an alternative electronic album which hints at synthwave and a melting pot of broad influences from dub reggae to dance to metal in equal measures. As an artist, Network Nick occupies the void between the synth-heavy soundtracks of a bygone era and the moody realities of today.
With track titles such as “Cocaine Pizza”, “Upside Down Great White Shark”, “Stockpiling Shoulders” and “Murder on Roller Skates”, “Johnny Synths” draws influences from retro arcade games and humorous experiences.
“Sunlight” is the only track with lyrics and features Russian synthwave artist Daria Danatelli on vocals as well as a musical contribution from Scott Miller (ex-Dry the River) from the metal band Primitai. The idea for the song came in part from Nick’s children who latched on to a melody and sang it repetitively on a walk during lockdown. This melody features on the breakdown interpreted by Daria.
The album also features a guest appearance from saxophonist Pete Fraser (Pogues, Veils, Paolo Nutini, Jamie Lenman) on the track ”Meeting Room Liaison”.
“Johnny Synths” was written and recorded at Network Nick’s home studio. Mixing and mastering duties were undertaken by long time collaborative engineer Rob Cavill whose track record includes working with the likes of Madonna amongst others.
The man behind Network Nick is also known as emcee, Deeflux, who has been a driving force in the UK’s hip hop scene for over 15 years. He has released numerous projects both solo and with the groups Natural Selection and C O R N E R S.
Nick’s musical journey began when he discovered Killers by Iron Maiden on cassette in the bargain section of a newsagents at the age of six and begged his grandmother to buy it for him. This single-handedly inspired him to pick up a guitar and join various ska, metal and prog bands through his school and early adult life, before discovering his love of electronic music in college. The rest is history.
